In less than two decades, coalbed methane (CBM) has emerged from obscurity on the fringes of the US natural gas industry to become an important and essential part of domestic supply.
CBM now accounts for almost 10% of US natural gas production and participants at a conference in Denver last week said volumes should continue to grow over the next decade, helping to offset declining domestic output of conventional gas.
"I believe the potential for coalbed methane is unlimited. The market is there, the demand is there and the supply is there," said Jon Bowerbank of energy management and technical support firm EMATS.
