At a time when big box super marts are swallowing up decades-old filmily stores in many communities, franchises are offering parents a way to pass on successful community--supported businesses to their children. Today, second-generation franchisees make up about one-tenth (9.7 percent) of all franchisees.

For most franchise systems, the franchisor must consent before a unit can be transferred from one franchisee to another franchisee.
