Jun. 21--Two supercomputers running at IBM Rochester rank among the top 10 of the world's fastest processing machines.
Yet the prototypes, called Blue Gene/L, which eventually will be assembled for customers, still are far from their ultimate sizes.
Six months ago, a prototype being made for the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California was the 73rd-fastest computer in existence. It then sped through data at a rate of 2 trillion operations per second, or 2 teraflops.
