Apr. 23--Imagine your IT manager suddenly tells you he's unhappy because his friend, an IT manager in a competing firm, is getting paid 30 percent more. You don't want to raise your IT manager's pay by 30 percent. On the other hand, you're not really sure whether you're underpaying him or not.

If you could, you'd like to tell your IT manager that his benefits package is much better; or that your IT manager's variable bonus has a greater upside than his friend's; or that you don't really believe there is a 30 percent difference in pay between the two positions.
