May 7--BAGHDAD, Iraq -- U.S. troops seized the governor's building in Najaf on Thursday and killed dozens of fighters in a separate clash near the city in the second day of attacks against rebel Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr and his militia.
Backed by tanks and heavy armor and converging from four sides, U.S. forces took the governor's building without a fight, although gunfire was heard afterward, according to local news reports.
The bloodiest battle occurred during a separate engagement about 6 miles away on the east side of the Euphrates River, in which an estimated 40 fighters were killed near Sadr's stronghold of Kufa, a U.S. official said.
