Apr. 21--DOWNS, Kan. -- Thanks to a state grant and volunteer labor, the city of Downs soon will have a new building to house the Downs Fire Department and Downs Ambulance Service.
The city received a Kan Step Community Development Block Grant for $206,179 to erect a 60- by 128-foot, pre-engineered building to house the two services.
Fire Chief Steve Hake said Tuesday the state requires the city to pay for 40 percent of the project. Most of that will be in the form of volunteer labor to erect the structure, he said, but the city of Downs also will chip in $12,708.
