Apr. 20--The city almost missed the boat.
With just three days until the $800-million luxury ocean liner Queen Mary 2 docks for the first time on the Hudson River, jutting 132 feet beyond the pier, New York City was under pressure to commit to renovating its overcrowded and outmoded passenger ship facilities.
Speaking at the 70-year-old West Side Passenger Ship Terminal yesterday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a broad plan to modernize the accommodations and build the first passenger ship berth and terminal in Brooklyn, either at Pier 7 or 12.
