You have to marvel at this quick-and-easy culture of ours. If take-out pizza puts on weight, let diet pills help take it off. Exercise and a salad supper? No need.

In March, the federal government will ban sales of the weight-loss supplement ephedra. Yet other pills that promise to burn fat will still be on sale, and they may not be any safer. I saw an advertisement for a product that supposedly allows "rapid weight loss and immediate energy without ephedra." If you believe the ad, it works so well that it's "almost like eating a low-fat diet but still allowing you to eat all of the delicious foods you love."
