Jan. 31--While the phrase "low carb" is everywhere, bread makers and grocers here say popular carbohydrate-restrictive diets haven't been bad for business.
Instead, they say consumer carb-consciousness and a growing interest in whole grains have led to new products and rising sales.
So, while a typical loaf of white sandwich bread has between about 13 and 25 grams of carbohydrates and 60 to 100 calories per slice, companies such as Sara Lee Bakery Group, Village Hearth Baking Co. and Whole Foods Market are offering more multigrain products and breads with 9 or fewer net carbs per slice.
