Last autumn, John Kerry's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination was in trouble. His poll numbers were dropping, and his campaign staff was not getting along. Reports surfaced that Kerry was managing disputes among his advisors, taking valuable time away from his campaign schedule.
In November, Kerry fired his campaign manager, Jim Jordan, and hired Mary Beth Cahill, who was Sen. Edward Kennedy's chief of staff. Campaign insiders say that Cahill brought a needed dose of order to the organization, freeing Kerry from management responsibilities and giving him more time to hit the campaign trail.
