Dick's Sporting Goods is making one of its toughest competitors part of the team.

Dick's is buying Galyan's Trading Co. for $362 million in cash and assumed debt. It will assimilate Galyan's giant sporting goods stores into its lineup early in 2005.

Galyan's, based in Indiana, operates 47 full-line sporting goods stores, many on two levels that feature climbing walls as part of the atmosphere and a store signature. Ed Stack, Dick's chairman, said the climbing walls will stay.

Dick's signature is indoor running tracks.
