Jan. 23--Fast-food restaurants yesterday played down the impact of the growing bird flu scare on chicken sales, saying that customers remained confident in the safety of their prepared foods.

Somruedee Deewanwong, communications and PR manager of McThai Co, the operator of the McDonald's restaurant chain in Thailand, said it was still unclear what impact the bird flu scare would have on sales at McDonald's outlets.

She said she believed consumers were confident that all of McDonald's raw materials were clean and free from contagious diseases.
