The Australian Government is promoting an education initiative aiming to improve the population's financial literacy. The Assistant Treasurer, Helen Coonan, said the initiative was to shape school children into 'financially savvy teenagers and successful adults'.
Last year a national survey conducted by the ANZ Bank found particularly low levels of financial literacy among young people and people with limited education. Also, Financial Literacy in Schools, a discussion paper released last year by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, reported that not all students have an opportunity to learn financial literacy.
