Jan. 27--The patient lay on her back, four paws poking up through the air and her tongue sticking out the side of her snout.

In the next room, veterinarian Chris Southard of Kinderhook sat in front of several computer monitors, watching as a digital image showed a cross-section of the dog's body. Southard pointed to a tiny white dot in the midst of a gray blotch -- the dog's adrenal gland.

The dot was a tumor. The dog was a patient in the region's first MRI scanner for pets, which is parked once a week behind Shaker Veterinary Hospital on Maxwell Road in Latham.
