Jan. 31--Hong Kong imposed a temporary halt on importation of live birds and poultry meat from China late Friday after Beijing reported more suspected avian influenza outbreaks have been found in the mainland.
"We have ... decided that all live birds, including chickens, ducks, geese, pet birds and day-old chickens, and all poultry meat would not be allowed to be exported to Hong Kong with immediate effect," the government said in a statement.
Local food and hygiene authorities said they will step up inspections of retail markets to watch for any signs of infection in chickens.
