Jan. 28--Spirits soared as prices climbed in the auction arena of 101 Livestock Market in Aromas on Tuesday, where brisk bidding on young cattle suggested that the worst of the "mad cow" disease scare might be over.
"It was a great day," said Jim Warren, president and owner of the cattle market south of Gilroy, where many Central California ranchers bring their cattle. "We got some real good prices, all the way around." The market has been closed in reaction to lower prices ever since U.S. agriculture officials announced Dec. 23 the discovery of a dairy cow infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Washington state.
