Mar. 29--SALISBURY, Mass. -- In its heyday, Salisbury Beach had all the trappings of a miniature Coney Island -- four miles of beach, bathers, bumper cars, dance halls, plenty of honky-tonk.
On sun-dappled days, this seacoast town on the New Hampshire border swarmed with day-trippers and vacationers. The smell of commerce and fried clams hung heavy in the air.
At the heart of the merriment spun the Broadway Flying Horses. This hand-carved carousel, equipped with two organs and 46 painted animals, including dogs, goats and horses, drew saucer-eyed kids and bemused adults all summer long.
