LANCASTER - Antelope Valley sheriff's Sgt. Dave Miklos almost didn't try to defend his Toughest Competitor Alive title in the 2004 California Police and Fire Games.
He had fallen behind in his physical training and was also busy preparing for his promotion to sergeant.
But on the last day of registration, Miklos faxed in his application. He's glad he did. Earlier this month, Miklos set a record in the 45-and-up competition, earning a record 5,203 points in events including a 5-kilometer run, 100-meter dash, 100-yard swim, bench press and rope climb.
