ORLANDO, Fla. _ Women taking estrogen after a hysterectomy increase their risk of stroke by 39 percent and gain no protection against heart disease, researchers announced Tuesday.
On the plus side, the National Institutes of Health trial showed that estrogen cut the chances of women suffering fractures because of osteoporosis between 30 percent and 39 percent.
And in a surprising piece of data, the study found a 23 percent lower rate of breast cancer in the estrogen group compared with women taking sugar pills. Scientists, however, said the breast-cancer rate may be a fluke and needs more study.
