Apr. 11--Pity the veggie burger.

Once a darling of the dieting set. Today, a comparative culinary outcast facing America's faddish loathing of carbohydrates.

Look at Gardenburger from Irvine. Shrinking sales of its flagship veggie burgers led to a 10 percent decline in revenues last fiscal year. And a rebound in overall sales in the first quarter of the new year was due primarily to Gardenburger's sales of other meat alternatives.

"We lost a little bit of energy because of the tremendous interest in the Atkins-type diets," says Scott Wallace, CEO of Gardenburger, which moved its headquarters from Oregon to Orange County late last year. ...
