Arm floaties. Water-ski belts. Life jackets wrapped in their original plastic packaging.
Those are some of the "personal floatation devices" members of the U.S. Coast Guard have seen when checking boats.
None would save a life, Oswego Chief Kenneth Smith said.
"Water toys don't cut it as personal flotation devices," Smith said.
To teach people what kind of life jackets are acceptable and to raise community awareness about water safety in general, members of the Oswego Coast Guard and auxiliary hosted a Safety and Rescue Day on Saturday.
