The panic struck the second I hit the water of Lake Ontario.
I flailed my arms, trying to stay afloat. My clothes, soaked heavy with water, pulled me down. My life jacket - my only hope - was nowhere to be found.
The canoe I had been riding in Saturday with Branden Smith, 13, had capsized.
He was wearing a life jacket. I was not.
