Article: "MY LIFE JACKET - MY ONLY HOPE - WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND'; REPORTER WAS "LUCKY" THAT HER NEAR-DROWNING WAS JUST AN EXERCISE.(Neighbors Oswego)

Byline: Delen Goldberg Staff writer

The panic struck the second I hit the water of Lake Ontario.

I flailed my arms, trying to stay afloat. My clothes, soaked heavy with water, pulled me down. My life jacket - my only hope - was nowhere to be found.

The canoe I had been riding in Saturday with Branden Smith, 13, had capsized.

He was wearing a life jacket. I was not.

He bobbed calmly in the water. I heaved and hollered, trying to figure out my next move.

What would save me from slipping into the murky water?
