1. GATES AND COURTYARD
Walls that enclose three sides of the Taj Mahal and its gardens would be major sights in their own right if they weren't serving as the setting for the most beautiful building in the world. The imposing red sandstone structures block visitors from seeing the Taj Mahal until just the right dramatic moment. Ornamentation around the gates features quotations from the Koran, proportioned so that all appear the same size, no matter how high up they might be. Small domed structures on top of the walls are Hindu in style.
