As the author herself confesses, Anne Lancashire's London Civic Theatre does not exhaustively document the history indicated in the title; the book "is intended, rather, to begin the construction of such a history, and of a broader history of early London theatre in general: by providing a historical outline of what can now be ascertained about civic theatre in London before 1559, relying above all, for the medieval and early Tudor period, on civic records manuscripts and on chronicle histories" (12).
