Like thousands of other young men and women, Camilo Mejia of Miami joined the Army because he wasn't sure what to do with his life. Now he's plenty sure. He must avoid a court-martial for abandoning his combat unit in Iraq or see his life ruined.
Clear across the country, Stephen Funk of Seattle had joined the Marine Corps Reserves after he dropped out of a biology class in college and wound up working in a pet shop.
"I wanted to belong and I wanted another direction in my life, and this seemed to offer it," Funk told the Guardian newspaper.
