Mar. 24--What does it take to make off with a piece of equipment that weighs more than 7 tons and is more than 9 feet high and 20 feet long?
It takes the skill to get the thing on a trailer.
Or out of sight.
Not to mention the privacy to pull off the job and the nerve to run the risk of doing severe jail time.
Texas apparently has all three. The Lone Star state leads the nation in heavy-equipment theft, according to the National Equipment Register.
The New York City-based register provides a database service to keep tabs on the monster earth movers and track patterns of theft and recovery. ...
