New Construction in Kern County, Calif., Gets off to Slow Start for Year.

Mar. 13--New construction in Kern County got off to a relatively slow start in 2004, with a January value of $85.4 million, according to a report by the Kern County Board of Trade released Friday.

That amount was $2.5 million less than in the first month of 2003.

Still, the value of new home construction was $65.3 million, up 17.7 percent from the previous January's $55.5 million.

Residential housing accounted for the bulk of all new construction, with nearly $45.5 million in housing starts in the city of Bakersfield alone. Unincorporated areas of Kern County combined for another $12.6 million.
