Mar. 10--If New Mexico is chosen as the site for a $10 million international competition of companies who are attempting to build and fly commercial space vehicles that would be capable of flying -- and reflying -- at 62 miles above earth, $9 million in state funding will become available.
The New Mexico Legislature, shortly before it adjourned on Feb. 19, approved the conditional use of $9 million to help stage the X Prize Cup. The funding will be used only if New Mexico is selected by the X Prize Foundation, and a final decision of where the annual competition will be staged could be made by March 16.
