Call it the tyranny of expectations.
It's the dense thicket of knitted brows that threatens when an artist veers from accepted paths, and it hobbles careers. Sparked by the media, fans or the culture at large, the stakes are high: It's acceptance vs. ostracism; the promise of fame for adhering to formula at the expense, sometimes, of integrity.
The best artists, in any field, are the ones who parry expectations and hold fast to the creative direction of their own vision.
