An Illinois health insurer achieved mixed success last month in bringing the insurance commissioners of North Carolina and Florida to trial to defend against lawsuits charging them with defamation and discrimination.

"The rule of law is a cornerstone of our society," said J. Patrick Rooney, chairman of Golden Rule Ins. Co., Lawrenceville, Ill. "And when someone, even a state regulator, goes too far and knowingly causes damage to someone, he must be held accountable."

In Raleigh, N.C., Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald W. Stephens ruled on Jan. 24 that North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance James E. Long could not be sued for defamation by Golden ...
