ST. LOUIS -- In 1764 French for traders founded this "gateway to the West," and for more than 100 years thence entrepreneurs sold goods to the pioneers passing through and dreaming of land, gold and glory.

Today entrepreneurs still thrive in St. Louis--but the goods they sell remain here, as the city's retail trade expands in conjunction with its steadily growing population.
