Mar. 24--Just two weeks after a blistering report criticized the state's Empire Zone job program and questioned its benefits, state officials say they have extended the program in Suffolk County to encompass four new areas.
The zones -- aimed at helping economically distressed areas -- will now include downtown Riverhead, Riverside in Southampton Town, Wyandanch in Babylon Town and Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, totaling about 143 acres, according to Gov. George Pataki's office.
