Jun. 28--BAGHDAD -- In his first days as the top U.S. administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer quickly won praise from Iraqi political leaders and civilians with his 18-hour workdays and blunt talk about establishing law and order in a war-torn country.
Mixing business suits with his trademark combat boots, he became the face of the U.S. occupation in Iraq. There were even whispers in Washington that he was being groomed to be secretary of state in a second Bush administration.
