As political issues, affirmative action and gay marriage have much in common, and the former may portend how the latter plays with voters come November.

The most obvious similarity is the emotions these issues generate, among groups personally affected _ racial minorities in the case of preferences, homosexuals on gay marriage _ and the much-larger general population.

Among middle-class voters, who determine elections, there is the same deep, and widespread, opposition to same-sex unions as there was to affirmative action before its supporters realized it was a loser on the campaign trail.
