SAN FRANCISCO _ OK, here's the deal, David Mamet is not a misogynist.
"Instance me," he challenges his Herbst Theatre audience last week, in his put-up or shut-up Chicago tough-guy accent.
And also, he doesn't sprinkle swear words across his works just for effect.
"I like to surprise people, I like to hear them gasp," says Mamet, whose new play, "Dr. Faustus," premiered Saturday at San Francisco's Magic Theatre, "but I don't do it to shock; it's easy to shock."
It's the characters' fault, really. They bring the language, and everything else as they dance through the playwright's head.
