Feb. 16--Phil Gottfried, a commercial real estate appraiser at Inland Empire Consultants Inc. in Ontario, charges by the hour to research and evaluate the value of a commercial property.

With the vaunted boom in commercial real estate, Gottfried has been working a lot of hours.

The number of appraisal requests at Inland Empire Consultants increased by 50 percent last year compared with 2002, when the business was like "a roller coaster, getting busy and getting slow," Gottfried said.

Clients pay as much as $7,000 an inspection, he said.
