Feb. 13--As one of the few hundred farms left in Mississippi's shrinking dairy business, Joe Armstrong's Dixie Dairy Sales is just a drop in the nation's milk pail.
But Tuesday morning, when a federal veterinarian beheaded three Dixie Dairy cows, Armstrong stood in the vanguard of the nation's battle with mad cow disease. The three cows, all suffering health problems, died in a state-federal program that pays farmers $50 for brain samples from sick or dead cattle. The U.S. Department of Agriculture tests the samples for mad cow disease.
