Feb. 11--Mexico has repeatedly defied the United States on international issues and not suffered for it because the two countries share a border and depend on each other economically, Mexican scholar and author Carlos Fuentes said Tuesday.
While Mexicans need jobs in the United States, the United States needs the pool of cheap labor that immigrants provide, he said at a San Antonio news conference at the Mexican Cultural Institute.
On a brief visit to San Antonio, Fuentes, 75, discussed U.S.-Mexican relations, Mexico's fledgling democracy and the coming presidential elections in both countries.
