Feb. 10--Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Director Chuck Shank will step down after 15 years leading the nation's first national lab.
The lab announced Monday that at the end of the year Shank will leave the multidisciplinary science lab nestled in the hills above UC Berkeley and intimately connected with the campus.
"I think after 15 years that the lab deserves a new leader," said Shank, 60.
The announcement comes just as the federal government said that the University of California's contract to run the Berkeley lab will go up for a bid for the first time since it became a federal lab in more than 50 years.
