Jan. 15--NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- This city, which has seen more than its share of layoffs in the last couple of years, got more bad news Wednesday when The Scooter Store announced it was cutting about 200 jobs, 125 of them in New Braunfels.
Scooter Store officials blamed the move on "a shortsighted, bureaucratic overreaction" by Medicare to fraud in the power wheelchair industry.
"We deeply regret the necessity of reducing our work force," said Margaret McGuckin, executive vice president of marketing for The Scooter Store, New Braunfels' second-largest employer. "Unfortunately, we have no choice."
