Jan. 14--Almost 20 acres of cypress and red maple swamp in Margate will be preserved under Broward County's parks bond program rather than developed into town houses.
In one of the largest purchases during the three-year effort to save the last remaining examples of native Florida in Broward, county commissioners Tuesday agreed to spend $4.2 million to buy the property. Although exotic plants have overrun part of the land, the rest is home to pine flatwoods, laurel oak and pond apple in addition to the swamp.
