DALLAS _ President Bush's plan for returning to the moon and sending astronauts to Mars sounds a lot like his father's 1989 proposal that never got off the ground.

But the new moon-Mars initiative, which Bush is scheduled to announce Wednesday, may get a boost from technologies not available the first time around.

Over the last 15 years, scientists have developed new lightweight materials and experimental propulsion systems, and smart robots that can explore other worlds.
