Jan. 9--Government inspectors need to test more U.S. cattle for mad cow disease, state veterinarian Dr. Robert Ehlenfeldt told state legislators Thursday.
In a briefing to the Assembly Agriculture Committee, Ehlenfeldt said that present testing is adequate and that last month's discovery of a mad cow case in Washington state represented a very slight risk to public health.
"I think we need (more testing) because of international trade issues and to insure we don't have a loss in consumer confidence," Ehlenfeldt said after the briefing.
