On January 8, Mark Reynolds stopped to repair the chain on his mountain bike. The trail was well used, a popular route for cyclists in California's Santa Ana Mountains. No one can say if Mark saw the lion or if the ambush came suddenly and from behind.

Mark Reynolds was killed and dragged into a nearby thicket. There, the lion began to feed on the body.

Hours later a young woman, Anne Hjelle, passed by on her bicycle. The cat sprang, mauled her in the face and neck and tried to drag her off. It was beaten back by other cyclists.

Anne is recovering. The mountain lion was shot dead later that day.
