"People expect the worst," singer-songwriter-DJ Samantha Ronson says of her debut album, Red (Roc-A-Fella). "They expect it to be half-assed, like, 'Oh, Damon Dash signed you because you're a socialite.'"

Truth be told, Ronson is a socialite: Her morn, Ann Jones, is married to ex-Foreigner rock god Mick Jones. And of course, Ronson's silver-spoon upbringing did bring her some advantages: She got her record deal by playing Roc-A-Fella CEO Dash her demo on an iPod during one of her frequent DJ sets at Manhattan hot bootes, and her celebrity DJ brother, Mark, produced several of the album's tracks.
