Aaron Payment, newly elected chairman of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, advocates building a casino with hotel and conference center near Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.
Payment narrowly defeated Bernard Bouscher, who led the tribe for 17 years, in a tribal election June 24, by a 4,190-to-4,028 vote.
The tribe is majority owner in Greektown Casino L.L.C., which last year took in more than $325 million in gambling revenue.
