THE dangers of passive smoking from exposure in pubs and restaurants may be twice as high as previously thought, according to doctors.
Their research shows the risk of heart disease could be doubled because older studies failed to include the effects of 'recreational' secondhand smoke.
A study involving almost 5,000 men who were monitored for 20 years found non-smokers who were exposed to the highest levels of passive smoking had a 50 to 60 per cent greater risk of heart disease.
Earlier studies which looked solely at the impact of living with a smoker found an extra risk of around 25 to 30 per cent.
