Thursday, August 29, was a memorable day, the climax of an eventful week in my back yard. The weather had been hot even for August, but on Thursday it rained an inch. I had to retreat indoors, but after the rain I ventured out and found a Vanessa cardui depositing eggs on a zinnia. Such an event is a challenge for butterfly chasers, so I ran for the camera and took several pictures at close range with a 75-150 zoom lens. Still not satisfied, I fetched the flash unit and the #2 close-up lens, then summoned the missus to hold a background board for me. The Vanessa was still concentrating on her life work, unmindful of witnesses.
