A: You're smart to make the distinction between the pure chili powder and the chili powder blends sold in most Midwestern supermarkets. Pure chili powder is dried, ground-up red chilies. The spice blend includes powdered chilies along with cumin and other unnamed spices. If you're unsure which kind your supermarket stocks, check the label.
