I REMEMBER my first visit to the Royal Albert Hall vividly.
I was 12 and, along with my summer school classmates, had been taken to watch a rehearsal for the Proms, which just happened to be Jacqueline du Pre playing Elgar's Cello Concerto.
The huge hall was almost empty, yet watching her perform was an incredibly intimate experience.
She played the cello with such passion and involvement. It was as if the instrument was an extension of her body.
It had a huge impact on me.
When I got home I told my parents that I wanted to learn the cello.
